The Pros And Cons Of Genetically Modified Foods

1452 Words6 Pages

The Perversion of Nature
In modern day, families across the globe consume potentially harmful genetically modified products, with little to no knowledge of the effects they may have on a person's health (Bailey 4). The uninformed society will then go on to pass down the negative aspects of these GMOs to children and pets (Bailey 1). Society relies on the cheap, yet damaging, “frankenfood” leading corporations have created (Cummins 1). Poor regulation and the greed of mankind has brought upon a devastating future for posterity (Cummins 2). GMOs, among the world’s silent killers, harm humans, wildlife, and the environment alike; consumers need to rise up against the destruction immediately (Cummins 1-6). Today, most food directed to children has some type of genetically engineered substance in it (Bailey 1). In the article, “Genetically Engineered Food Poses Ethical Concerns,” it states, “65-75% of the foods sold contain genetically engineered components” (Bailey 2). The new altered food can potentially change DNA in the human body. As told by Britt Bailey, “Genes inserted into GM soy, for example, can transfer into the DNA [deoxyribonucleic acid] of bacteria living inside us, and that the toxic insecticide produced by GM corn was found in the blood of pregnant women and their unborn fetuses.” The new modifications will transfer to the newborn baby creating a new gene in the baby’s genetics, to be forever changed (Bailey 1). The companies who have created the GMOs neglect to, “perform extensive safety testing to assure the well-being of infants or children”, which is a scary thought (Bailey 2). The exposer at such a young age may also cause hormonal imbalance and allergic reactions not seen in previous generations. “Up to 2 million, or 8%, of children in the U.S. are affected by food allergies as are up to 2% adults,” this number may begin to increase as the amount of GMOs being distributed to consumer continues (Bailey …show more content…

Ronnie Cummins argues, “GE foods, for example, have been found to contain toxins, some of them deadly and others cancer-causing.” This is very scary and not something anyone would willingly let enter their body. Not only can GMOs give you cancer, but can give you other terrible illnesses as well (Cummins 1). A study from the Institute for Responsible Technology, concluded that GMOs have five conditions that may may, “trigger or exacerbate,” gluten-related disorders. This includes: intestinal permeability, imbalanced gut bacteria, immune activation and allergic response, impaired digestion, and damage to the intestinal wall. These are all very harmful and painful conditions that no consumer would enjoy having (Waila
