American democracy is founded on faith in something called “the will of the people.” According to the declaration of independence, our leaders have the right to rule only with “the consent of the governed.” With relation to guns and gun control, this means that it is up to the people of America to decide on having increased gun control or not. Currently, there has been much controversy about gun control and the second amendment right to bear arms. Because of the recent incidents of mass and public shootings, this right needs to be reevaluated. In 2000, approximately 30,000 people died from uncontrollable gun violence, even though the US has gun control laws. Gun control doesn’t mean that the government will take them away entirely; it means that certain types of guns will be banned. For example, a fully automatic rifle, like an M16, would not be used to hunt and therefore shouldn’t be available to the public. More legislation is still needed on the federal level. Even though there are gun laws in place now, most of them are up to the state and not all of them are taking the action to enforce them. The national government needs to enforce these laws, that is the only that gun control laws are going to be effective in all of the states. Regarding the government on the national level, it has made efforts to please both sides of the arguments. President Barrack Obama has proposed new laws to reduce gun violence as well as keeping gun owners happy too. For example, he has proposed to require deeper background checks on gun owners, ban military-style weapons, and limit magazine capacity to ten rounds.
