As a millennial born at the very end of the decade, I have lived through many life changing events in my short 18 years of life. Some are good, some are bad and some are ugly. Us Millennials have lived through some of the most incredible moments in human history: when Apple released the iPhone, it literally changed the world. When YouTube was created, it changed the way we watch and share videos. When Facebook was created, the whole world was brought together at the tip of our fingers. As the nation that once had Jim Crow Law, we elected Barack Obama, the first black president in the United States. This article didn’t really touch on the gun violence itself, but instead the psychological and the theological interpretation of gun control and its effects on humans. It took a different approach and shined a different light on a national debate that politicians avoid touching. I think this essay gives a fitting “solution” to my topic, because although there really isn’t a solution to gun violence at this point, but to understand why people do what they do will help us get closer to coming up with a solution. The author wrote that the reason Americans are so emotional when it comes to gun control is because of fear. “Simply put, many people want guns to protect themselves out of the fear of other people. Others want the removal of guns out of the fear that the availability of guns enhances the likelihood that they will be used against them. Both positions appear to be rooted in fear.” –Hargrove. The author then went on using the Sandy Hooks incident to prove his point. After the shooting at Sandy Hooks elementary school, some people pushed for legislation that would restrict people with mental illness to buy guns. On the other hand, others pushed for legislation that would allow the teachers to be trained and armed in class. This just shows how diverse Americans are when it comes to gun control. The author also touched on the Golden Rule, the ideal human relationship, “do unto others as you would have them unto you.” Personally, I think it is the best solution.
