Arguments Against Gun Control

From the beginning of American society to today, the United States has been debating some of the most important topics known to man. One topic that continues to make its way into the everyday lives of Americans is the “Gun Rights vs. Gun Control” argument. Throughout history, the citizens of the United States have used firearms to protect the nation, protect their families, hunt for food, and engage in sporting activities. Gun control laws aim to restrict or regulate firearms by selecting who can sell, buy, and possess certain guns. Many people, in society today, have questioned whether guns are a helpful tool, or if they are the tools that are causing forms of violence in America, such as suicide. Gun control laws will not accomplish its intended goals of lowering the crime rate. Gun Control Overview says that “It will be difficult to keep weapons from being acquired by “high-risk” individuals, even under Federal laws and enforcement. Legal ramifications will not stop criminals from making crimes. Those who are determined, irrational, and insane will never respond to rational signals or the threat of legal ramifications. Indeed, such signals and ramifications will most likely encourage them further (3).” Even if gun control laws are passed, criminals will still find a way to acquire the guns they want. Citizens should also be able to defend their Second Amendment rights. The Second Amendment to the United States constitution states “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The Founding Fathers included this in the Bill of Rights because they feared the federal government might oppress the population if the people did not have the means to defend themselves as a nation and as individuals. Certain citizens should have the right to carry concealed guns so that they be protected and prepared for situations in which they feel
