Over the years the United States has seen an increase in gun violence crimes across the country, but no change in gun laws. However, citizens believe that establishing gun laws would be taking away their legal rights of acquiring and possessing firearms. The original legal right of possessing firearms is stated in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. However, installing gun laws will not diminish a citizen’s legal right, but simply help the issue. The establishing of gun laws will help protect citizens and create a safer community. The first step for gun laws is needing a license to actually purchase a firearm. The license will include a background check and a mental health test with the minimum applying age of 18. A mass shooting in Port Arthur, Tasmania, Australia led by Martin Bryant had 35 deaths and 23 injuries. The shooter was later identified to be mentally handicapped, having an IQ of 66 and being socially/intellectually impaired. After the mass shooting, Australia declared stricter gun control laws. These laws included serial number registration, a license for the possessor and dealer, and a valid reason for possessing the firearm. Since these laws were established, Australia has not seen a mass shooting in 20 years. Switzerland has high gun ownership rates, but low crime rates. Switzerland gun laws include a mandatory background check, a license to carry concealed weapons, and overall banning of automatic weapons. Switzerland also has mandatory safety class with firearms at local shooting ranges. Japan is one of the countries with the least gun violence in the world. Japan has kept a strict gun control law that is regulated by the National Policing Agency of Japan. The process for licensing is lengthy, and guns are only allowed for hunting or sport shooting.
