The Pros And Cons Of Gun Control Laws

1149 Words5 Pages

Mental illnesses lead to gun violence. Some people believe that limiting guns will help decrease the amount of murders per year from gun violence. But, raising the age limit and setting more stringent laws on owning guns will not help the fact that violent mass shootings happen no matter what law has been made. Restricting the mentally ill from having access of guns is nearly impossible considering that some people who have a mental illness don’t physically show that they have a mental illness. Ones who sell guns legally in a store or illegally in the black market, will not know the true identity of the buyer of the gun. Allowing gun control laws will violate the second amendment which states “ A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”, (Haskins, 2017, October 13) this amendment clearly states that citizens have the right to keep a firearm in their homes and under their own ownership. Gun control supporters want a gun control law that would make that purchasing a gun would be much more difficult and if more firearms were banned, people would be safer (Haskins, 2017, October 13). This statement is clearly false because thirty-six percent of gun purchases in the U.S. are conducted without a background check and law following people who would do actual background checks for guns would be 0.7% (Michel, 2013, April 17), and would lead to the black market and the 253,000 guns that illegally are dealt across the Mexican border and into the U.S. (Haskins, 2017, October 13). Another conversation that comes up is “why don’t all U.S. states have Red Flag laws”? Red Flag laws are laws that strictly restrict the mentally ill from having access to gun. Currently, five out of fifty-one states in America have Red Flag laws and eighteen have been introduced to these laws (2018, February 15). Red Flag laws will not technically work considering that some people with mental illnesses are unpredictable for their actions and are nearly impossible for people to constantly be watching the mentally ill’s actions all day. People will lie; mentally ill people might not physically show that they are mentally ill but mentally this person really is. From the past research, the U.S. government and the U.S. citizens cannot stop the mentally ill from having access to firearms. People will lie about their true identities and their past life, and if this person has a
