According to the U.S Department of State, an estimated of 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders around the world, which includes men, women, and children. Although, these numbers don’t contain people that are trafficked within the same country (Franco 424). “Human trafficking is the recruitment of people for commercial sexual exploitation or forced labor”, which is often enforced through deceit, threat of violence or by taking advantage of a person’s vulnerability (Human Trafficking). Human Trafficking could happen to anyone. Human Trafficking should be stopped because it preys on the vulnerable, it's ubiquitous and it causes psychological and physical effects.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice's Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, most of the children involved are “at-risk, vulnerable youths with troubled backgrounds who are homeless or drug dependent” (States Fight Sex Trafficking of Kids). For instance, vulnerable members of society such as the “poor, unemployed, drug-dependent, uneducated, or disabled” are usually targeted by traffickers (Franco 426). Often, minors that are “runaways or come from abusive homes or foster homes” are brought into the human trafficking lifestyle (States Fight Sex Trafficking of Kids). Studies from a federal analysis of cases of sex and labor trafficking between January 2008 and June 210 show that 83% of victims are US Citizens, 87% are 24 or younger and 94% are female (States Fight Sex Trafficking of Kids). Although it is argued that women tend to be targeted the most because of their vulnerability, low-status and impoverished positions in the societies around the world, any person despite age or gender can be a victim of trafficking (Franco 426) Based on this research, the main causes of human trafficking are poverty, unemployment, ethnicity, gender and discrimination. The commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) recently acknowledged manifestation of sexual child abuse, which has effects both physical and mental on children domestically and abroad (Barron). It has extreme physical and psychological health consequences because “the victims experience a vast array of health problems including appalling living situations, unsafe working circumstances, inadequate sanitation, poor nutrition, physical and psychological violence, and postponement in seeking medical care” (Mohsen 35). In addition, most victims seek medical care & have unfortunate consequences such as injuries and substance abuse due to the “physically and emotionally abusive nature of sex trafficking” (Barron). Although, only a few victims are identified but the ones who are face a high level of stigmatization (Human Trafficking). Specialized services are often needed to heal victims from the trauma caused by their abuse (Human Trafficking). Many survivors of human trafficking suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is disorder caused by a terrifying experience (Human Trafficking). Results of a study shows that the physical health symptoms of 120 trafficked women in Moldova showed that “61.7%, 60.9% and 44.2% of them have reported headaches, stomach pain and memory problems, respectively” (Mohsen 35). Based of this research, victims of human trafficking
