Racial profiling is when an individual is targeted solely based on their race or ethnicity (Joshua Dressler, 1). It is widely common in the U.S. Racial profiling is unjust and wrong for many reasons. Conducting a search during a stop only based on the person’s racial background is unfair and most of all unprofessional. Racial profiling also will cause a division amongst people. It will also cause superiority amongst races. Racial profiling will also raise the tension between the minorities and law enforcement administrators. One of the most controversial events involving racial profiling was the killing of Trayvon Martin (Whitley R.P. Kaufman). Trayvon Martin was fatally shot in Florida by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch. Martin was walking back from a convenience store after purchasing some items. The neighborhood watch (Zimmerman) reported Martin to the Sanford Police as suspicious. Some high school did a walk out in support of Trayvon (Clayton Cramer and David Burnett). People were doing petition asking for a full investigation which surpassed 2.2 million signatures. The Trayvon Martin case also received a lot of media coverage, which grabbed the attention of millions of people across the nation. While some people argued whether this was a racial profiling or a random shooting, the majority believed it was racial profiling and were disappointed by the outcome. The African American community was furious by the judge’s decision to rule Zimmerman not guilty.
