The Standardized test, similar to the STAAR, can be a nightmare for some students. It should not be allowed in Texas due to many reasons such as wasting precious education time, not promoting students to the next grade, causing stress, provoking students to take drugs, and not determining students’ full potential. Standardized tests should not continue because they provide inaccurate feedback about students and destroy their confidence for their future education and life. Although the standardized test shows if the student should get promoted or not, the test lacks showing the full potential of some students because it judges a student based on a few skills. Could it be that you didn’t retain any of the information that you were taught all year long or is it because you are just horrible at taking a test. Either way, it is very difficult and unfair for the State of Texas to base everything on one test. How can one test determine what you have learned all year? In 2001 George W. Bush in started the no child left behind program. This program stated that children from grades three through twelve should be given a standardized test at the end of their course. The original purpose of these tests was to hold educators accountable for their teaching method. While the no child left behind program (NCLB) might have made teachers actually teach, there has been some bad effects to this program. Some of the bad effects of the program are the stress put on children, the inaccuracy of the standardized test and finally the tremendous cost of these tests.

Standardized tests are toxic to the future prospects of America: the students. The tests are prejudiced against minority test-takers as a result of biased questions. Students’ education is harmed due to narrowed curriculums and school closings. With the knowledge gained about standardized tests, many colleges have become “test-optional institutions” (Soares 3). In fact, according the article “Standardized Tests Discriminate Against Minority and Lower Income Students,” Wake Forest University went test-optional in 2009 and today there are over 870 test-optional colleges, representing almost 40 percent of all four-year degree colleges in America (Soares 3).
Do standardized tests infuriate you, or are you fine with them the way they are? Like most arguments, this has two sides; one side says that standardized tests are fine the way they are. The other side claims that the system isn’t a particularly good fit. I personally believe that the current testing system should be changed in a variety of ways. My first suggestion of change is that standardized tests are unfair and non-objective to students.
Another reason standardized tests aren 't a good way of teaching children is that they are stressful and pointless. Studies were done that show standardized tests cause sever anxiety and stress, even in the sharpest students. Researcher Gregory J. Cizek says that these tests cause gripping anxiety, causing younger students to vomit, cry, or both(7). Another example, NCLB standards are different in every state, meaning the comparison between states education is pointless. Evidence shows that in some states, students of the same grade level were shown to be answering mostly open-ended and essay questions, while in other states, students were answering mostly multiple-choice and short answer questions(120).More evidence shows that the multiple choice format some states are using for standardized tests are a useless assessment tool.
Are standardized test truly a fair assessment of student’s abilities or not? What are standardized tests? Standardized tests are a test given to assess a student or a group of students using a test with the same questions and answers to determine students educational stand points. Standardized test are not a fair assessment for measuring student ability because they will not help students in the future, they can cause students to lose opportunities, and studies say standardized tests do not show true improvement. First of all Standardized test will not help students in the future.
Only limited amount of achievements, a small portion of the goals of education that can determine a person’s quality can be measured through standardized test. According to psychometrician Daniel Koretz, standardized test scores "usually do not provide a direct and complete measure of educational achievement." However, when most of the population wanting to understand current student achievement, they think that it is enough to talk about scores based and only on standardized tests. Accepting this assumption at face value, as nearly all pundits, journalists, and politicians do, is to fall prey to a "dangerous illusion." Although standardized tests can be made broader and more inclusive, twenty-two examples of truly valuable abilities and attributes: creativity, critical thinking, resilience, motivation, persistence, curiosity, endurance, reliability, enthusiasm, empathy, self-awareness, self-discipline, leadership, civic-mindedness, courage, compassion, resourcefulness, sense of beauty, sense of wonder, honesty, integrity are not intended or fully measured in the standardized test.
The Center on Education Policy has reported that almost half of the school districts in the US has reduced their time in social studies, science, and arts, while increase in math and reading. United States has problem with testing by having mismatch standards in different districts and states, aligning national test. In a multiple choice are straightforward results, students thinking is simplistic, and they also don’t show student’s creativity. While response test shows student critical thinking. Gerald W. Bracey adds that standardized test doesn’t measure motivation, resilience, curiosity, persistence, reliability, leadership, and etc.
I think I do okay on standardized test, I understand questions on a test then a quiz. I think I'm a bad test taker, because I never really do good on test. Whenever I have a test to take I always have a good feeling about it because I have studied and I understand the task, but I guess when I take the test I always intend to do a bad job I think it's because I get nervous or my mind just goes into a total blank and it stops me from doing my test. I really need to work not getting nervous when I take test because it a big influence in my grades. I'm a good worker when it comes to homework, but test aren't my thing.
