Standardized tests are started way too early in the school systems. "Students as young as 6 or 7 years old are now subjected to weeks of preparation for high stakes tests. Because math, reading, and to a lesser extent, science are the only subjects regularly tested, students are drilled in those topics." (Kumeh).
After analyzing the three interviews I conducted, each interviewee had different thoughts and applications to standardized tests. I want to start off by stating what each of my participants believes about standardized tests. Sara stated that “too much time is spent on studying for these tests” (interviewee #1, 1). She also said that as a teacher she wanted her “students to LOVE history, sometimes I feel that that got lost in the desire to have them all pass” (interviewee #1,1). Mary’s opinion read, “I don’t think that it is fair because a simple test shouldn’t judge your whole intelligence” (interviewee #2, 2).
Some may argue that standardized tests are an accurate measure of one's academic level, a good way to see if they are being taught what they need to be taught, and if they are smart enough to get into a college or school. Standardized tests have existed for a very long time, even ancient Greece used similar tests.. A researcher from law.journal.ku.edu states, “This testing began in 1901 after the creation of the College Entrance Examination Board”(Naughton 264). So, standardized tests are not a new concept and they continue to exist. Some may believe that standardized tests are a way to test how well a teacher is at teaching.
Standardized testing is any form of test that (1) requires all test takers to answer the same questions, or a selection of questions from common bank of questions, in the same way, and that (2) is scored in a “standard” or consistent manner(Edglossary.org). This is good for memorizing facts, and learning about topics, but they are not the best for true knowledge comprehension and retention. There should not be standardized testing, and a better way should replace it or even discontinue the standardized testing program. Some of the smartest teachers do not rely on standardized testing to see how well a particular student is learning in class.

Throughout the years, standardized testing has become something no student looks forward to. But, there might be deeper reasons as to why they despise it. Standardized tests have been around since the mid-1800s and have been used to measure a students' knowledge and ability to achieve their goals. However, as the year's progress, this form of testing has proven to cause problems. Students, teachers, and schools are all affected by standardized testing and its components in various ways.
It is the summer of 1959, Ted McCarrel and E. F. Lindquist created the American College Testing (ACT) program. It was a solution to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The SAT was used by more selective schools during the early 1900s. McCarrel and Lindquist created a test that would allow usage for admissions, placement, and academic preparation(erikthered). These tests have been in existence for quite some time and the tests have only been increasing in difficulty with every few years.
Only limited amount of achievements, a small portion of the goals of education that can determine a person’s quality can be measured through standardized test. According to psychometrician Daniel Koretz, standardized test scores "usually do not provide a direct and complete measure of educational achievement." However, when most of the population wanting to understand current student achievement, they think that it is enough to talk about scores based and only on standardized tests. Accepting this assumption at face value, as nearly all pundits, journalists, and politicians do, is to fall prey to a "dangerous illusion." Although standardized tests can be made broader and more inclusive, twenty-two examples of truly valuable abilities and attributes: creativity, critical thinking, resilience, motivation, persistence, curiosity, endurance, reliability, enthusiasm, empathy, self-awareness, self-discipline, leadership, civic-mindedness, courage, compassion, resourcefulness, sense of beauty, sense of wonder, honesty, integrity are not intended or fully measured in the standardized test.
Are We Truly Up To Standard? The Real Issue With Standardized Testing Standardized testing has been a heated debate for quite a while, with some stating that it is incredibly stressful, while others believe it sets a standard. If you’re unfamiliar with the topic, standardized tests are tests taken by students based off curriculum, but aren’t quite the same as your everyday review tests. These are long tests that are marked by computers, and are used to “judge” the student’s academic level. However, they are incredibly unnecessary.
School’s are using standardized testing for the wrong reason. “A standardized test is any examination that’s administered and scored in a predetermined, standard manner. There are two major kinds of standardized tests: aptitude tests and achievement tests” (Popham, 1999). The most common examples of aptitude tests are the SAT and the
Standardized testing was created as a measuring system to compare individual student’s skill level to a large group quickly. Standardized tests can date back as far as the 1800’s. Almost one-hundred years later, a psychologist, Alfred Binet developed a skill test that spread into both school and military testing. Thirty years later, the popular SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) was created and accepted by universities to gain entrance into the school (Fletcher). While standardized tests do give a baseline of knowledge quickly, it does not accurately measure a student’s full knowledge and takes away from class time learning.
As its name suggests, standardized tests create a reliable standard to every students. In general, the purpose of using standardized tests is to measure the academic performance in the subjects that students have learnt. (Edglossary.org, 2015) So, in order to achieve their goal, the standardized tests are expected to be credible.
Standardized testing does not require much of an effort. These tests are checked by the computer thus, saving more time and since these tests are administered in the same manner, it would be easier for them to evaluate the test results because these tests have its own standards. These tests are also objective and are based by general-knowledge thus, making the test results unbiased and non-subjective. Educators will also be able to compare and evaluate a student’s progress over a period of time. These tests would show whether a student has performed well or not (OccupyTheory, 2014).
