Without the use of two atomic bombs, 214,000 lives could have been saved. Such a striking number of casualties in three short days suggests that President Truman’s decision to use nuclear weapons on two Japanese towns was exceedingly unethical. However, without dropping the world’s most destructive weapon, World War II would have had a much different ending. On the surface, the atomic bomb formation may have seemed like a quick process that effectively prevented further Japanese attacks, but beneath, its creation involved hundreds of researchers and considerable amounts of skepticism. Due to this, countries such as the United States started to make technological development a top priority in order to counter Nazi advancement. Specifically, the Nazis aspired to be the first country to create the atomic bomb, which urged the United States to challenge this goal, and research new weapons of their own. This decision ultimately spurred the official start of the top-secret atomic bomb creation, titled ‘The Manhattan Project.” On top of the mass destruction in Europe, the Japanese posed a significant threat to American sovereignty through the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. War was almost immediately declared on Japan by the United States. The United States now saw themselves at war with two major global powers, and knew the only solution was a weapon powerful enough to destroy any possibility of a continued war, thus beginning the Manhattan Project development.
