The constitution has always been questioned, not in the sense that people want to break the constitution more like they want to figure out how to follow it and what the founding fathers had in mind when they wrote it. The death penalty is one of the many difficult subjects to discuss, because it is so controversial. It is so controversial, because of the eighth amendment, which states, “ Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted“ (History book). Because some people believe that the death penalty is an unusal punishment, they believe that inmates, even ones that commit the most heinous crimes, should rot in jail or in an asylum. This controversy has recently come back up into the media, because of the Dylann Roof case, which is dealing with a young man walking into an African American church and shooting the unarmed and helpless worshippers. A person from CNN said,”The death penalty is wrong. Using it to punish Dylann Roof may make some of us feel good in the short term but will only make it harder to uproot a system that's more likely to harm people who look more like Roof's victims than Roof himself,” (Balley). He clearly is adamant that the death penalty is not a respectable thing to do to another human being, but it also states in the article in his reason for believing that Dylann Roof should not die. And that is because most of the families do not want to kill Roof, they instead want to spend the rest of his days in jail, thinking about what he did. The families of the victims are forgiving people, and forgave him for his crimes. They are now trying to heal from the sadness Roof caused. There are others that are not as forgiving
