Leadership is the ability to guide people without forcing direction. An individual who leads and organization can establish a clear vision by providing the necessary information for their staff. If you are hired for a leadership or supervisory role, you should be able to lead in a positive and professional way. This sets a good example for your employees. A leader can encourage and inspire others to achieve and reach their highest potential.
When I raised my hand, and took my oath of service I had no idea of the journey Leadership Philosophy that laid ahead of me. Joining late in life was one transition, but the transition into the Non-Commission Officer (NCO) Corps, and a leader has been a very rewarding experience. The values that were instilled in me as a child and those that have been drilled into my make-up as an NCO are very similar. The tenants of the seven Army Values have been what I have lived by most of my life and career, however there are four out of the seven values that I hold most valuable and live out on a day to day basis.
According to the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Standing Order Two, leaders are inspired, dedicated, approachable, responsive, and connected to the needs and future of our workforce. The Encarta dictionary defines leadership as the ability to guide, direct, or influence people. My definition of leadership is a combination of these two references—leaders should be able to motivate others to accomplish a goal or mission. In order to do this, leaders need to be involved in their people’s work and personal life, and realize how to correlate their personnel’s goals with the mission’s goals. Some people require minimal leader involvement, while other people require their leader to get more personally involved to show them the way.
The purpose of this essay is to discuss the United States Army’s doctrine on the three elements of developmental leadership required to shape modern leaders who fight and win our nation’s wars. The three categories defined by the Army are Institutional training and education, operational assignments, and self-development. (AR 600-100, 5) All three of these guiding principles work in a constant cyclical motion. Each guiding principle builds upon the previous, and if executed properly, follows that leader throughout the length of their career.
The Army has identified several essential competencies for effective leadership, including leading, developing, and achieving. Effective leaders in the Army possess these competencies and effectively demonstrate them in their daily activities. One of the most crucial qualities of an effective leader in the Army is the ability to lead. Leaders must inspire and motivate their subordinates to achieve common goals. They should be able to provide clear direction, set expectations, and communicate effectively with their team members.

I have been told many times in my career that I care too much. The idea that caring about the unit, the mission, or your Soldiers could be a bad thing is absurd. The idea that I cared too much would become apparent while assigned to 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division.
In order to run a successful organization, especially a good standing Army, there needs to be quality leaders within the organization. Leaders are artists, remaining flexible and adaptable in order to conform to any certain situation. In FM 6-22, leadership is defined as, “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization”. The vast majority of successful Army leaders exemplify this definition in their everyday life. So, what exactly does this process involve?
Leadership: The activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this. Leader: The person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. Leadership requires a set of skills which are essential in order to be a successful leader.
My leadership philosophy will always be to take care of Soldiers. Soldiers are important to the Army and, as such, should be as equally important as the mission. My personal values play a role in my leadership philosophy. The personal values I possess are honesty, integrity, good customer service, and knowing my job well. I carry out my responsibilities by prioritizing, organizing, following up, and always being available as much as possible.
LEADERSHIP QUALITIES 26. The dictionary meaning of Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization, or the ability to do this. According to Dwight D. Eisenhower “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it. To become an effective Military Leader, one need to have some significant leadership qualities”.
For many years organizations of all types have examined factors that drive performance among its individuals. Military organizations are very similar in this respect; however, have some unique factors that drive Soldier performance. Values and leadership are a key elements that drive an organizations ability to achieve success. The Army Values consist of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. These values are the foundation by which the United States Army is built.

With the use of rank, the Army and the military are divided into several different levels. These rankings play a huge role in producing efficiency and order. It is accomplished by designating gradually more educated and experienced soldiers to lead others who are less experienced using good leadership techniques.
The Army today is composed of leaders and followers. Great leaders require abilities that will enable them to train, lead and motivate their followers. Those abilities are called conceptual abilities. What are conceptual abilities? Who do these abilities applies to?
Leadership in the Army is the fundamental foundation of the organization. Leaders like Officers and Non- Commission Officers implement and set the standard of leader to soldiers. These leaders ensure the Army soldiers are trained and prepare for any hardships they face. The term Leadership can be defined differently based on the organization in which the term is applied to. In the Army Leadership can be described as a "characterized by a complex mix of organizational, situational, and mission demands on a leader who applies personal qualities, abilities, and experiences to exert influence on the organization, its people, the situation, and the unfolding mission" (ADP 6-22).
