I am currently reading Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen. The main protagonist in this novel is named Halley; a shy and quiet girl. She meets her opposite and unlikely best friend at age eleven when Scarlett moves to Lakeview a “neighborhood of friends” (Dessen 6). However, everything turns south at the beginning of their grade eleven year. Scarlett’s boyfriend dies in a motorcycle accident. In addition, she is starting to develop feelings for a boy. Despite the challenges she faces, Halley must put on a brave face and support Scarlett. There are two types of conflict within this novel. One being person vs. self, as Halley struggles to discover herself; the second, person vs. person. Halley must deal with a changing relationship between her mother and herself. They have been best friends since they were children and are inseparable. Halley and Scarlett are an example of true friendship because their bond is strong and unbreakable. This is confirmed when Halley says; “Even in their tiny family, with me as an honorary member; there were traditions”. (Dessen 27) Family is often the most important part of many peoples lives. For Halley to feel like an honorary member of Scarlett’s family proves how intimate their relationship is. Furthermore, it also shows their commitment to be friends indefinitely. The relationship between family members lasts forever and they hope their friendship lasts just as long. I too have such a close relationship with one of my best friends and I feel like an honorary member of her family. When you are friends with someone for a very long time , it is natural to be extremely comfortable with each other. This is unlike the majority of other relationships. The importance of Halley and Scarlett’s bond furthers the plot and connects the novel's
