The Wrong Of Abortion

When writing a research paper finding the best sources is key. For example, Guttmacher Institute’s article called Facts and Consequences: Legality, Incidence and Safety of Abortion Worldwide published in the Fall of 2009, written by Susan A. Cohen was found to be ineffective for backing up my claim of why abortion should be illegal; however The Wrong of Abortion written by Patrick Lee and Robert P. George was found to be effective in backing up my argument. In order to be aware of an effective or ineffective source you must analyze by compare and contrast of how the authors are organized, how they argue their points, and how credible they are for using them as a source. All three of the authors make their thesis very clear. In Susan’s article …show more content…

Susan uses logos, meaning to persuade by the use of logic and reasoning, to connect with her readers. Susan presents her argument by using statistics and reason. At one point in Susan’s article under the subheading “The Heavy Toll of Unsafe Abortions” she displays a bar graph showing the unsafe abortions in the world; following she tells about the costs of abortions in developing countries by saying “In Guatemala, for example, where 37% of the population lives on less than $2 a day, the estimated cost of an illegal abortion carried out by a private medical doctor or in a private medical clinic ranges between $128 and $1,026. In Uganda, where 97% live on less than $2 a day, the price of an abortion from a professional source is $6–58. And in Pakistan, 66% live on less than $2 a day, and the average fee for a doctor-assisted abortion is $50–104,” which gives the reader a chance to think critically and reason out why unsafe abortions are occurring more in places where abortion is illegal. Patrick and Robert also use logos to connect with their readers, but instead of using graphs and statistics they use more critical thinking scenarios. Under the subheading titled “No-Person Arguments: The Dualist Version” Patrick and Robert say, “So, how should we use the word “person”? Are human embryos persons or not? People may stipulate different meanings for the word “person,” but we think it is clear that what we normally …show more content…

In Susan’s article I found citations for the Gutmacher Institute stated below the bar graphs she presents under the subheadings “The Heavy Toll of Unsafe Abortion” and “Making Abortion Less Likely.” She presents more information in her body paragraphs and the citations are not listed. By not listing where she’s getting her information it can make a reader suspicious and maybe not use the article as source. Patrick and Robert have a very different approach; because of the dense read he provides are large section at the end of the paper to explain what/who he is arguing against and a more detailed explanation of why he’s arguing it instead of putting it in the article and creating unnecessary talking. I personally have never heard of either of these publications or authors. Patrick and Robert use a half of a page for citing the sources he is using, and also creates citations for further reading for the readers who loved his
