Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858 in New York City. He went to Harvard College and graduated in 1880, then proceeded to marry a woman named Alice Hathaway Lee. He later went to Columbia University Law School, but after a year he dropped out and entered public service. At 23, in 1881, he was elected to the New York State Assembly and served for two years until both his mother and wife passed away. After 2 years of grieving he moved back to New York and married his second wife, Edith Kermit Carow, and they had 5 children. Starting in 1888 he began to slowly work his way up politically; from being on the U.S. Civil Service Commission to president of the New York City Board of Police Commissioners, assistant secretary if the U.S.
