Thomas developed a strained relationship with some patrol officers, as he included irrelevant material in reports, in a manner to shine light on other officer’s deficiencies. He was instructed not to utilize narratives in that manner but document in memo form and advise. I was also provided information from the prosecutor’s office that they did not like Thomas’s approach with them in reference to warrants, or prosecution of cases, and the feeling as though he was trying to tell them how to do their job. My Byrne’s scolding does not make the children settle down because his scolding is not followed by punishment or reinforcement. “In a positive reinforcement-based system, animals are rewarded with something they like for responding appropriately to the caregiver’s cues or commands,” (Laule 2). Mr. Byrne could use positive reinforcement instead of just scolding the students. “Reinforcement training, where the animal performs the correct behavior in order to escape or avoid something it does not like,” (Laule 2). Mr. Byrne could give the students practice quizzes containing information on the tests as a positive punishment.
Therefore, we already present two possibly considerably hurdles that fortunately the majority of children manage to overcome smoothly. It is saddening to think that there is such a statistical difference in murder rates just because of the color of their skin. In Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give, she writes a story of a character named Starr that goes through her life between her neighborhood which is African American to her predominantly white school where she experiences instances of police brutality and racism such as the murder of her childhood friend Khalil.
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a system used within schools to help identify students with behavior challenges by using a behavior management strategy to reinforce their behaviors through positive interventions. The matrix for the schools will state the expectation in all areas of the school by doing their best, being responsible, respect and on time. This model is school-wide focus, which means all students is require to follow the matrix to demonstrate positive behaviors in the school. Each column, which is arrival/dismissal, bathroom, cafeteria and classroom is list in the specific areas for all students to see and follow, for instance arrival/dismissal will be in the hallways, bathroom in the bathroom, cafeteria in the cafeteria and classroom in the classroom. This assignment made me realize how much of an introvert I really am. There isn't anyone who I really know well enough to to be able to distinguish if they have a firm or a growth mindset. So I decided to just ask people what mindset they thought they were, then examine to see if they were right. In the book there is a section where it shows how the two mindsets work. It gives an example of a bad day and how each mindset would react; I read it out loud and asked how they would react.

Children with disabilities require a lot more support than those without a disability in order to help them develop their skills and become more independent. Disabilities can affect more than one area of a child’s development depending on what disability they have and what support is available in order to help improve the child’s needs etc. Emotionally children are affected due to them maybe having signs of depression where they are quiet than the rest of the children and they shy away from joining in with different activities and getting involved with other children.
I think Thomas’ behavior regressed because he is not getting that attention from his mother. In this situation, his mother is recovering from surgery, so she has not been able to give him the attention that he needs, which could be a cause of his behavior. Another factor that could play into this is how Thomas’ father has been discipling him since his mother is recovering. Since Thomas has been dealing with more negative consequences and the fact that his father is not as patient as his mother is with him, that could play another role. The PBIS model addresses and acknowledges the above mentioned criteria within its three tiered model, thereby supporting current best practice for behavioural intervention. PBIS like many behavioural models, SW, RtL and PAR, centres on a proactive rather than reactive or punitive response to behaviour, such as time-out and suspension (Arter, 2007; Horner, Sugai and Anderson, 2010; Simonsen et al., 2010). Supported within these frameworks are core principles - incorporating a proactive approach with positive reinforcement and encouragement in addition to logical consequences that progress along a continuum. Simonsen et al., 2010 states research concludes implementing PBIS and multi tiered intervention models reduce problem behaviour, increases student – staff relationships and suggests this can lead to an increase in student instruction time and academic engagement during this time.
Throughout this essay I will be explaining how a behaviour policy supports teachers and how it can also create an effective learning environment. I will also be highlighting any issues which could potentially arise from the use of a behaviour policy. A behaviour policy is guidance for members of staff within a school on how to deal with different behaviours, and sets out the expectations of behaviour for all children at the school. If a behaviour policy is written well it will support the formation of an effective learning environment. An effective learning environment for young children is an environment in which all children feel able to express themselves freely, allowing them to learn effectively.
