Do you realize how much we use light and electricity? I'm sure you're sitting under a lightbulb right now as you're reading this paper (hints the title). This is why Thomas Edison is the greatest and smartest inventor of our time. Throughout his life he had a total of 1,093 patents. Along with all his inventing skills he was a good businessman. Thomas Alva Edison was born February 11, 1847. He was born in a little town in Ohio called Milan. Thomas Edison only went to school for a few months. He was home schooled the rest of the time. Soon after when he was about 7 they moved to Michigan. Then in 1868 he parted from his family and moved to Boston. This is where he started to become an inventor. In Boston he claimed his first patent. It was an electric vote recorder. This invention was a failure but this changed him into and inventor. (nps.gov)

This was like a telephone that could send recorded messages. The old telegraph could send anywhere from 20 to about 40 words per minute. Edison invented another type of telegraph that was much better than the other ones. His telegraph could record and send up to 1,000 words per minute! If you think about it Edison's telegraph could send up to 980 more words per minute. Now that is what you call improvements. What does this do for us today? The phone, this are the ideas and technology they used to invent the phone. The automatic telegraph also led Edison into inventing the “speaking” telegraph which was just basically another version of the telegraph.
