Thomas Edison, an American national was on February 11, 1847 born in Milan, Ohio, United States. He was a great inventor and founder of various famous companies which include the “General Electric” which is one the largest companies of the world today. His major inventions are Electric light bulb, Kinetograph (a camera for motion pictures), alkaline storage batteries, phonograph and many more. Perhaps his major invention was the organized research. Edison belonged to a noble family. He was the last of seven children of Samuel and Nancy Edison. Samuel, his father, was an exiled Canadian political activist and his mother Nancy was a school teacher. • Carbon Microphone: Edison invented the Carbon Microphone in 1877-78. It was used in all telephones and Bell receivers until 1980’s. It was used in radio broadcasting and public address works through 1920’s. A Carbon Microphone is a sound to electrical signal transducer (energy form transformer) consisting of two metal plates separated by granules of carbon. One plate faces outwards which acts as a diaphragm. When sound waves are struck on this plate, the pressure on granules changes, change in pressure on granules changes the electrical resistance between both the plates of the microphone. A direct current is passed from one plate of the microphone to the other and the changing resistance results in the changing current. • Electric Light Bulb: Edison invented the first commercial light bulb in 1879. He actually improved the old ideas for making of an incandescent lamp. He started a series of experiments using Copper, Platinum and other metal filaments. During his journey of inventing electric bulb, he failed one thousand times, but he didn’t give up and did first successful experiment on October 22nd, 1879 which lasted for 13.5 hours. Later on, Edison and his team discovered a carbonized bamboo filament which could last for more than 1200
