While this was occurring Tom ran out of the house because he was confused. The Ewells came up with a story stating that Tom raped Mayella and they went to court for it. Eventually, it was found out that Mayella lied to hide the embarrassment of trying to kiss an African American man along with trying to make herself feel better. Bob Ewell wanted to accuse Tom to cover his own tracks in abusing his daughter. Yet, with all this information and evidence Tom’s verdict was guilty.
Mayella Ewell chose to lie under oath and accuse Tom of raping her. By telling this false statement and lying under oath, Mayella changed Tom’s life forever. Tom ended up getting sent to prison for this lie she told. He knew that he was not going to have a chance and won this case, which for him meant the electric chair. Tom tried to make it over the fence but ended up
Ewell and his daughter, Mayella’s testimonies say that Tom jumped on Mayella, beating and taking advantage of her until she finally passed out. That is when Mr. Ewell came into the story. He came and saw that mayella was badly beaten and had been raped, but he never took Mayella to see the doctor. This sets off red flags. Bob Ewell noted that Mayella was badly beaten.
When it is time for the trial to take place, Atticus forbids the kids from coming to it. This does not stop the children, however, as they show up and sit in the colored balcony with Calpurnia's, (the maid) pastor, Reverend Sykes. During the trial, Atticus demines the Ewell's credibility by proving that they are lying. During Tom's testimony, Atticus shows that Mayella was the one that advanced on Tom, and when Bob Ewell found this, he beat her. Atticus shows this through a few ways: First, he asks Tom Robinson to stand up and it is obvious that he could not have done it to Mayella; his left arm is a lot shorter than his right arm.
This part of the story has two versions. The Ewell’s version is that after that while they were inside the house he grabbed her by the neck and threw her into the ground and Bob Ewell heard the commotion and ran fast to his house as fast as he could. Suddenly Bob saw Tom on top of Mayella and ran inside, but Tom escaped
Bob Ewell claims that on the night of November 21st, he was out gathering kindle and heard Mayella “screamin’ fit to beat Jesus”. He ran towards the window to discover Mayella being raped by Tom Robinson. When Bob Ewell enters the house to assist with Mayella’s situation, Tom had already left the residence through the front door. After adjusting to the situation, Bob raced to Heck Tate to inform him about the issue. Bob Ewell provided that he saw the room was “slung about” as if “there was a fight”, resulting in Mayella to be “on the floor squallin’”.
Later in the text, during Tom Robinson’s testimony, he states “ She said she never kissed a grown man before an’ she might as well kiss a nigger. She says what her papa do to her don’t count,” This further confirmed that Bob Ewell has been mistreating Mayella and insinuated that he was assaulting her. This knowledge coupled with Bob Ewell’s known drinking habits suggests that he is capable of giving Mayella the injuries that he claimed came from Tom

During the trial, Tom Robinson revealed that Mayella’s father verbally and sexually abuses her. Tom states “She says she never kissed a grown man before. She says what her papa do to her don’t count.” (Doc. B) After Mr. Ewell caught Tom and Mayella, he called Mayella a “goddamn whore” and threatens her by saying “I’ll kill ya.” (Doc. B)
Mayella had asked Tom to help her get the box down since she could not do it on her own. Tom agreed to help her, so he walked over to her. Once Tom had gotten the box down for Mayella, she had told him to fall onto the ground and kiss her. After this occurred, Tom had been wrongly accused of beating and raping her while Mayella knew the truth. The scene also had a witness who was Mr. Finch, but he still let the town believe that he was the one who had raped Mayella.
Do you know what it feels like to be powerless? A white nineteen year old woman named Mayella Ewell Falsely accuses a black man of raping her in Maycomb, Alabama, in the 1930’s, and is rendered powerless, due to being recessive in her social class, race, and gender. She does so in hopes of escaping her abusive father, and a chance to have a better life. Although Mayella is white, she has been shunned by African Americans and other white people. Mayella is a very young woman that does not own anything nice, nor clean, besides geranium flowers.
As she is being questioned she recives looks from her father when she could say something that can get him in trouble “Mayella looked at her father, who was sitting with his chair tipped against the railing. He sat up straight and waited for her to answer”(Lee 209). As we learn earlier Mr. Ewell has a drinking problem and uses the money his family gets for beer. Which can cause him to act differently which is proven by Mayella. Mayella had bruises on the right side of her face and it is believed that Tom had caused them.
In this paragraph I will be questioning the Ewells’ reasoning for lying. While reading the court scenes, I got the feeling that Mayella and Bob had separate motives for trying to convict Tom. There are quite a few reasons that Bob would want Tom Robinson convicted. His most demanding motive would have to be the need to cover up the fact that he abuses his children.
There are many reasons why I want to be a social worker. When I was young, my family went through some traumatic changes. To help me cope, my mother sent me to see the school social worker. I spent loads of time in a social worker's office for most of my life so I’ve been lucky to have a firsthand experience with the work done by social workers. I’ve seen the changes and differences that are made in people's lives and I want to be a part of that.
