Smoking and tobacco product use is a big public health concern among adolescents and young adults as we continue to see an increased in usage at a younger age. Raising the sale age to 21 for tobacco products, makes us hope that it will have a positive impact on public health.
We would expect fewer adolescents and young adults to be smoking due to the increase in sale age. Along with the increase is sale age, marketing around schools and playgrounds should be eliminated as well. If the marketing around schools and playgrounds was gone, adolescents and young adults would be less tempted to try the products being advertised. Increasing the sale age to 21 would also be a way to keep cigarettes and tobacco products out of high schools, which is where most individuals first experiment with tobacco products. There are not many 21-year-olds who are still in high school which would eliminate the chances of young adolescents and adults having someone around of legal purchasing age to purchase tobacco products for them. E-cigarettes are unregulated by the FDA and still are a major health risk for those using and those being exposed to these products. E-cigarettes are more readily available to adolescents and young adults. Advertisements and marketing of different flavors is appealing to them making them more tempted to try e-cigarettes.
