In order to maintain the health of a single cell, it must receive its required amount of nutrients while maintaining an efficient system to cleanse and remove waste. Now, this basic concept also applies to healthcare organizations. Specifically, organizations require nutrients such as money, human resources, and medical supplies while maintaining policies and procedures to remove waste that is not necessary. Unfortunately, organizations that do not maintain this balance between intake and output can cause employees both physical and emotional harm (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2018). As nursing leaders, it is imperative to maintain this healthy balance, while recognizing changes that must be made to improve the health of the organization. Specifically, toxic behaviors that defer an organization’s health can be unilateral decision making, ignoring requests, careless insensitivity, and the avoidance of conflict. Nursing leaders that display these characteristics may believe that they are supplying nutrients to the organization. However, this is could not be further from the truth as they characteristics are toxic waste that must be removed immediately (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2018). First, leaders must know themselves fully, including identifying their values, importance of work ethic, outlook on life, morals, and values. Also, through this self-assessment, leaders are able to bring awareness to their strengths and weakness in the workplace. Next, when leaders identify their values they must act in accordance; no matter the situation. Also, leaders must listen to each of their employees as if they were each a unique wealth of information that is critical to the success of the organization (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch,
