What are transgenders? Why should they matter? Transgenders are people like you and I, the only difference is one of us isn't happy with the gender they were given in birth. Transgenders are people who want to change their gender, that's all, they aren't happy or don't feel right in the body they were given. Transgenders matter because they are people, they live their lives like the rest of us.
Today, transgenders have more rights than they did in 1980s. In 80s there weren't many transgenders, the technology wasn't as advanced so they were just transgenders mentally. Today, now that our technology and research is updated transgenders can take steps in becoming the person they want to be. Now that there are more transgenders than before is …show more content…

However there is still one thing that they aren't truly accepted to. Transgenders aren’t allowed to join the military, if they are in the military they can get discharged at any minute, for any reason. Here's the problem, they are about 15,000 transgenders serving in the military, some are open about who they really are and others aren't. Technically transgenders aren't allowed to join the military, however if the commander in charge is fine with it, they can allow a transgender to join, if they aren't they can take them out. Commanders have the right to choose whether or not they allow them.Some transgenders lie about what their sex is, if they get caught they can be discharged. Some transgenders are allowed to be open about being transgender but in the paper work they are still known as the gender they were born with, the military doesn't see them as who they want to be. There are many different scenarios a transgender can go through, depending the way they handle it and there commander. They are only a few reasons why they aren’t, one being that the military is slow. In 2011, homosexuals were finally allowed to serve openly in the military. A few years have passed since then but it takes time to change the way things are. Another main reason is because of health and mental reasons. Transgenders who want to change their sex are called transexuals. In order for transexuals to change they need to be taking hormones, after some time with the hormones they can have the surgery to completely change themselves. Since they are taking hormones many people believe that there hormones will affect their health and the way they serve. The truth is that it will affect them but not too much.
