Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to determine which tree nut will have the highest energy content of the four tree nuts (Almonds, Pecans, Hazelnuts, or Walnuts). Background Information All organisms need food, water, air, a habitat, sunlight, and temperature to survive and prosper in life (known by eSchoolToday) . Organisms need food to provide nutrients and energy for the organism to live and prosper in their environment, whether organisms are heterotrophic or autotrophic. Being heterotrophic, organisms will need to compete to obtain food and energy through plants and other animals. Autotrophs make their own source of energy and food through photosynthesis. The tree nuts were gathered (Almonds, Pecans, Walnuts, Hazelnuts). The initial mass of each tree nut and food holder was recorded using a weigh boat (after being zeroed) a balance was used to find the mass in Grams. Each tree nut was tested a total of five times to allow for error. A food holder was gathered. Hazelnuts were mounted onto the food holder to allow the Hazelnuts to burn with out damaging the holder. A temperature probe was connected to the computer to begin data collection. The computer was then connected to the “01 Energy in Food from the Biology with Vernier” from LoggerPro to begin data collection. After setting up the computer 50 mL of cold water was measured into a test tube. After measuring 50 mL the water was measured for initial mass. The test tube was positioned 1.5 to 2.0 cm above the food holder and food sample. The temperature probe was suspended in the water. The probe did not touch the bottom of the test tube nor the sides of the test tube. On the computer “Begin” was clicked to start data collection of the initial temperature of the water for 45 seconds per each tree nut test.
