In the year 2000, 21 states and The District of Columbia had school uniform policies(Brain). In the state of New Orleans 95% of public schools require uniforms(Brain). A uniform policy is. Even though there may be a lack of self-expression , school uniforms are an all-around good idea because they decrease bullying and they give no need for dress code.
Sadly there are some problems with uniforms, the major one being that self-expression becomes limited. “Clothing choices are ‘a crucial form of self-expression"’(Should), the problem is that one can find ways to express themselves in another way than clothes. Even though kids don't like uniforms they can't deny the fact that not having to pick out an outfit every day that fits the school’s dress code and is on trend can mornings “less stress[ful]” (20). Another problem that dress codes have that uniforms fix is violations, having to hunt kids who are breaking the dress code can be stressful, but wearing uniforms fixes that one may only have to dress code a few people for nail polish or hair “I can tell you that the dress code took up a great deal of my time in the area of discipline.”(Should). "’Kids were spending time in the office because they were not fulfilling the dress code... That was time away from class."’(Should), why are we taking school time away from our kids when most problems will be fixed with the addition of uniforms. There is also the huge argument about how sexist dress codes are, but uniforms can fix that “‘I’ve never seen a boy called out for his attire even though they also break the rules,”’(The).
