On a very practical level, an experience that will influence my academic work and goals would be my previous schooling. I am thinking specifically about my schooling at Prairie Bible Institute where I earned my Licensed Practical Nurse diploma. Attending Prairie helped me to improve my study skills and gave me a wonderful foundation of knowledge, skills and experience in the field of nursing. Perhaps most importantly my experiences at Prairie taught me that I really enjoy nursing and gave me the confidence that this is the right career path for me. It was heartbreaking to see the many health issues among this group of people due to poor diet and lack of good health education but I truly loved getting to experience the people and the wide scope of cases that we encountered. Although I was never able to experience any specialization work in the small hospital, I was able to work in several different areas such as acute care, long term care and emergent care. Having this opportunity to work under my preceptor to put to practice my education has really motivated me to continue school and work to increase my nursing skills. My second preceptorship was a community health focus and I was able to travel to India and teach basic health hygiene as well as tuberculosis prevention and recognition. As a team of five nursing students and three instructors, we partnered with Operation Mobilization and taught at different “Good Shepard” schools located in the slums of Hyderabad, India. We also had the opportunity to provide some mobile clinic services to a more rural tribe.
