The Trump administration may think that United States (hereafter US) bases in the East Asian region is not mutually beneficial, but simply a parasitical relationship. Numbers, statistics, and data however, beg to disagree. Even from a logical standpoint of diplomacy, the US benefits a great deal by having its military bases in the region. The President-elect is considering the act of withdrawing our troops if these countries “don’t do their part” but political experts concur that these countries indeed do and exceeds what is expected of them. The US is one of the few countries who boast the capacity to have nuclear weapons, but ironically or not, is leaning towards decreasing it. It is one of the most prominent countries to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (hereafter NPT) in 1968 along with the other members of the so-called nuclear-weapon states (hereafter NWS) of China, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom. This treaty justifies and acknowledges the NWS’ legality of possessing nuclear weapons. While this may seem as a positive move towards non-proliferation, their main goal is to prevent other countries from possessing one themselves. This US-led treaty is to prevent possibly hostile nations from legally becoming a nuclear state that may change the status quo or threaten the P-5 (Permanent Five)’s dominance. The US has then taken a firm stance to prevent nuclear weapons from proliferating since President Richard Nixon and observed by succeeding American Presidents . Aside from the fact that changing our stance without preamble would be harshly criticized by the international community, the American people themselves are against proliferation. There is only one moment in the Earth’s more than 4.5 billion years of existence that a nuclear weapon was utilized and it was during the Second World War by the US. We are the only known nation to mankind who have used this so-called weapon of mass destruction to another independent country. The effect was something that surprised even our scientists who invented it expected, totally obliterating the land, polluting the air, killing the people, and with its aftermaths bringing sickness to citizens who somehow survived, but latterly died in agony.
