A Baby’s Life: Whose Choice Is It?
The topic of abortion stands as one of the most controversial issues until today. Most pro-choice advocates often embellish the idea of abortion by stating that women have the right to their own bodies. As an obvious pro-choice supporter, Valerie Tarico writes down ten reasons supporting abortion. Tarico claims that abortion somewhat empowers women and gives them a “fresh start.” She even claims that God or nature stands as the ultimate “abortion provider.” However, aside from the fact that it does not at all empower women nor give them a do over, abortion also takes away the baby’s own right to live.
Although Tarico may claim abortion, in a way, empowers women, it actually does the complete opposite. Tarico states that “being able to delay and limit child bearing is fundamental to female empowerment and equality.” However, aborting a fetus just proves how irresponsible the woman had acted. Unbelievingly, Tarico upholds a view in which “real people count more than potential people, hypothetical people, or corporate people.” She addresses an unborn fetus as if it does not exist as a human being, and nor will it develop into one; hence, disregarding the fetus. Tarico asserts that “morality is about the well-being of sentient beings,” failing to recognize that, even in the womb, fetuses have consciousness or the characteristics of an alive person. An article produced by What To Expect states that as early as week 8, a fetus could even already feel with its face. Also, several articles confirm that fetuses have the ability to hear, taste, and even remember when he or she still inhabits the womb of his mother. Hence, this makes the fetus a complete human being as well, with the equal rights to live with those who have entered the world
