Love and Violence in Romeo and Juliet We all wonder who caused the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. There were many people involved in this egregious situation. In this romantic play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, a big tragedy strikes the City of Verona. Many people could have been accused of this tragedy including Romeo and Juliet, the Capulets and Montagues, Tybalt, the nurse, and Friar Lawrence. The biggest problem that transpired between the star-crossed lovers, was the family feud between the two royal families. The Capulets and Montagues are to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet because of their appalling family feud. Lord and Lady Capulet along with Lord and Lady Montague are to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. In the beginning of this play, the Prince announces to the two families his anger about their fury. He says to them, “You men, you beasts,/ That quench the fire of your pernicious rage”(1.1.79-80). As a result of the feud between the two families, it is causing everybody around harm and agony. People are getting injured and some even killed because of their selfish manner. Lord Capulet was a pretty big cause himself. He was so strict and wouldn’t let Juliet see anyone except who he told her to. Juliet announces to her father that she does not want to marry Count Paris, the young gentlemen Lord Capulet has told her that she will marry. He says to her, “Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch”(3.5.161.). While he is yelling at her, Juliet stumbles as he pushes and and shoves her away. Juliet is already secretly married to Romeo and doesn’t want to betray him.
