Introduction.
The paper discusses the use of visual memory in spelling and second language acquisition, for the English department students in King Fisal University. The purpose of this research paper, is to establish the importance of visual memory in spelling and second language acquisition, for the reader. This research paper is also written to inform the students about the cognitive process and the visual memory. As known, there are different methods that can help the person to recover and memorize words. Using the visual memory is one of these methods. In psychology, the visual memory defined as, "the ability to recall visual images in the form of objects, events, or words"(McGraw-Hill Concise Dictionary of Modern Medicine. © 2002).

In the Arabic language, words are mostly written as they spoken. Therefore, our ability to spell words in Arabic is most likely to be an easy task. While in English, the case is completely different. In the English language, we can easily encounter words with silent letters, and sometimes long words with silent letters. Also, this little difference between the two languages can be confusing to us. So, here we come to the use of the visual memory in spelling. How important this ability is? How can we use this cognitive ability to help us in our spelling skill? How can we develop this ability, and by …show more content…
The 'o' in 'home' is not pronounced the same way as the 'o' in 'glove'. In fact, research shows that the difficulty of developing a strong visual memory for irregular words actually undermines the students' ability to decode phonologically sound words as well. While it is estimated that about 80% of the English language follows phonetic rules, students with weak orthographic processing begin to distrust all words"(Orthographic processing).
The previous quotations, show that the effect of visual memory and or-thographic processing is not only on spelling, but also on the other lan-guage skills. Therefore, by developing this cognitive process we can de-velop different language skills, thanks to the extended effect of this factor. According to Saul McLeod, the brain or the memory can hold a great and different amount of information. From images to sounds to meaning. According to psychologists, encoding, storage, and retrieval are the three important aspects in information processing that are covered by the term
