Emerging Trends: Walgreens Leads the Way In 2008 Walgreens, one of the nation’s leading drugstore chains introduced a state of the art distribution center in Winsor, Connecticut. This was the second facility of its kind that was specially designed to employ individuals with disabilities which was modeled off the first building that opened in South Carolina in 2007. The mangers of both sites share an overall goal of providing jobs to at least one third of the available jobs in the distribution centers. Walgreens remains a leader in providing jobs for people with diverse backgrounds with equal opportunities that include advancement and job mobility. The U.S department of labor estimates that today 20% of the labor force includes individuals with disabilities (Donelly & Givens 2010). The South Carolina distribution center includes a work force of 400 employees with 40 percent having a physical or cognitive disability. With these numbers the center has also been able to increase efficiency by 20 percent. Walgreens has proven that you can hire individuals with disabilities and still archive greater levels of success than those that have less disabled employees. The company has set a benchmark for other companies to model similar programs off of. The second question of what intangibles have benefited Walgreens is very simple. The employees them self, have been given an opportunity to experience a career. This not only has a positive effect on the non-disabled employees but gives the disabled employees a feeling of ownership in the company and what it is producing. These types of experiences and emotions are unmeasurable. This is truly a reflection of what the company stands for and how they treat their customers and
