The 1850 in America was a crucial time period because there were a series of crucial events that were happing all at once. Ironically, the 1850 started with a compromise, which can be said was the initiation of a cold war getting hotter. Moreover, during this period there were individuals such as Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and John C. Calhoun that were trying to mold the direction of the United States into a better path. These individuals were trying to figure out the future of the United States, specifically slavery. Would slavery be part of the nation or should slavery be abolished? Initially, the first Missouri compromise of 1820 was an agreement between South and North involving primarily the regulation of slavery in the western territory. It prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana Territory north of the parallel of 36, 30' line except within the boundary of the proposed state of Missouri. In other words, the imaginary 36, 30 lines across the southern border of Missouri stated that anything above that line is a free state and anything below that line is a sate. The issue of this compromise was that the admission of Missouri as a slave state would give slave states (southern) control over the senate. This crisis was averted when Maine was admitted to the union to balance out the states. The reason the compromises and the act managed to delay the civil war was because slavery was still legal. The reason the civil war occurred was because issues such as Slavery, sectionalism, and the argument of State's rights vs. Federal rights were treated as compromises rather than issues. The southern states were content that the Missouri compromise was enacted because it allowed them to strength and practice the fugitive slave act. The northern states were content when the Nebraska Kansas act was enacted because it gave states to decide how they wanted to enter the union. It may seem that these compromises and act were ineffective and lack complexity, but for a decade it managed to keep the union together. It is the fact that even though both the northern states and the southern states did not agree issue, they manage to come to peace until both sides could not come to peace anymore. Both the compromise and Kansas Nebraska act although did have bloody consequences it was the thin string that slavery was tearing apart. The tension between the north and south was slowly intensifying, but this act did maintain the country
