“You can’t take my rights away!” “Protect the children!” “My son died in a school shooting.” “My neighbor abuses his right to bear arms.” “Teachers grab your guns.” “Second Amendment!” “We went in lockdown today, because someone threatened to shoot up the school.” “Second Amendment!” These typical phrases can be heard when discussing the matter on gun violence. A common question that is asked when discussing gun violence is, how can it be prevented? A man answered that very question in the article, “What should America Do about Gun Violence?” his name was Wayne LaPierre. In LaPierre’s essay he states, “About a third of our schools have armed security already – because it works” (LaPierre 501). My response to that is that the best answer we can come up with when decreasing gun violence or is that stated in here because LaPierre speaks on behalf of the National Rifle Association and just wants to sell more guns. I mean it makes sense when you tell a family that their children would be safer with guns in their schools, they are then going to pass a law about arming our schools, which in return puts more money into the gun production. In the article, “Arming Teachers: Three Reasons Why Teachers Should Not Carry Guns In School,” they make a valid point. The article states that having guns on school grounds is a very bad idea, because kids can get their hands on anything. They used the example of when it came around Christmas time you always knew where your parents hid your Christmas gifts or if you didn’t know where they were you would dig everywhere until you found them and once you did you would open them and see what they were. Well if kids know there is a gun on school property they will dig until they find it and once they get ahold of it no one can say what might happen. This is another great reason on why we should not arm out school.
