What Are The Most Significant Challenges In An Internship Site

Over the last couple of months at my internship site, one of the most significant challenges that I have a hard time with is establishing trust with some of the group members. As an intern, I have to rotate between six different sites. Each week I am scheduled at four out of the six drop-in places. Therefore, it becomes difficult at times to keep with what’s happening with each group if I am not scheduled consistently at the drop- in sites. Most of the client’s that attend Youth-Outlook often come to group each week so that they can feel supported, respected, and be social with peers and adults are who understand and are part of the LGBTQ community. Many of them have experienced bullying, harassment, and trauma that most peers in their communities have never experienced before. For the most part, I have developed relationships and trust with the young people that attend group on a weekly basis. However, I have found that because I am not able to participate in each of the sites on a consistent basis, there are a few clients that have a hard time connecting with me. These individuals only see me twice a month at the Ottawa site, and it has been a challenge to develop a trusting relationship with them. At times they often have trouble acknowledging or responding to me or the other adults. Also, these young people have faced many challenges in their lives that have included child abuse and neglect by their parents. “ For racial or ethnically diverse persons, the basis for not readily trusting you or revealing feelings may be related to their experiences”( Hepworth, D. H., Rooney, R. H., Dewberry Rooney, G. D., Strom-Gottfried, K., & Larsen, J. A. (2017).
