What effects does bullying have on children today? “Among students who said they were frequently bullied in school, nearly 30 percent reported depression, and 11 percent reported serious thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts. Among those who frequently bullied others in school, almost 19 percent reported experiencing depression and about 8 percent reported suicidal thoughts or attempts.” (nbcnews.com). Obviously there are many different effects of getting bullied, and being a bully. Some of the different effects that can happen are emotional effects, such as, depression and anxiety, physical effects, such as, substance abuse and suicide, and also psychological effects, such as, low self-esteem and loneliness. Many different effects result from bullying, and more people should be aware of those getting bullied and help them out. There are many different effects that happen that relate to the emotions. Depression is a feeling of sadness and loneness that affects many people. According to Harpaz, “Depression is an illness that is not totally understood, and may have a variety of causes, but it is clear that it can have a relationship to bullying. Both bullies and their victims are more likely to suffer from depression than youth who are not involved in bullying. This connection can be long-lasting; people who are bullied as children are more likely to suffer from depression as an adult than children not involved in bullying.” More than just the bully is affected, most people think that it is just the victim that develops the illnesses. Some reasons that someone gets bullied are because the bully is jealous of them, wants something they have, or they don’t accept themselves.
