The American Civil War was a war that started in South Carolina when the Confederates attacked the Union soldiers on April 12, 1861. The Civil War was not avoidable because of the many events leading up to the war. The Northern states and the Southern states were angry with each other and their hatred for each other only continued to grow. One main reason the Civil War began was because of their disagreement on slavery. A few events leading up to the Civil War included the Fugitive Slave Act, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the Kansas Nebraska Act, and the Dred Scott Decision. These events made the American Civil War inevitable. The Fugitive Slave Act was passed, by Congress, in 1850 stating that any slave who had escaped into another state, including a free state, were to be returned to their owner. It allowed the people in Kansas and Nebraska decide if they wanted to allow slavery or not. This act completely ignored the Missouri Compromise which stated that all states south of the line could own slaves, but in any state north of the line, slavery was prohibited. This upset many northerners because northern states (Kansas and Nebraska) could now become slave states if they got enough votes. The Kansas Nebraska Act helped pave the way for the Civil War. The Dred Scott Decision was made in 1857. Dred Scott was a slave, but his master moved to a state where slavery was prohibited, so he believed that he should be a free man. The Supreme Court disagreed and ruled that he was still a slave because he was property brought by his owner. The Dred Scott Decision upset many people and it showed the people where the government stood on the issue of slavery. The North wanted to end all slavery immediately, but the Kansas Nebraska Act only brought slavery closer to them, even within their own states or
