PROMOTING WORKFORCE DIVERSITY

Workforce diversity, in simple terms is, a workforce consisting of a rich mix of employees from different backgrounds- race, age, gender, culture, ethnicity etc. From the abundance of different minds, comes numerous creative and inspired ideas. Diversity in the workplace brings with it a host of potential benefits for the company. It proves to be a valuable asset for any organization that seeks a competitive advantage over its peers.

A good example of an organization which devotedly follows workforce diversity is Apple Inc. Among its employees, while 55% belong to the Caucasian race, the rest includes 15% of Asians, 11% from the Hispanic community, 7% of Blacks and 2% with a mixed race. Coming to its gender distribution, women occupy more than 30% of the workforce with a scope for a future increase.
Apple is also an avid sponsor of the Human Rights Campaign, America’s largest LGBT Organization, as well as the National Center for Women and Information Technology, a center for encouraging young women to get involved in science and technology. “Our definition of diversity goes far beyond the traditional categories of race, gender, and ethnicity. It includes personal qualities that usually go unmeasured, like sexual orientation, veteran status, and disabilities.
