1.1 Introduction An automobile is designed and manufactured considering three basic criterions known as performance, handling and ride. Vehicle handling is an important aspect in automobile engineering. Automotive subsystems such as suspension, wheels and steering system need to be flawless to provide better handling in the vehicle. For Proper handling, it is necessary to have appropriate alignment of wheels. It is very crucial to eliminate the possible errors and other misalignments. Wheel alignment is the geometrical relationship of the wheel to the vehicle, the other wheels and the road. It provides better handling while driving on irregular and rough roads. The suspension sustains the wheels with proper steer and camber approachwith respect to the road surface. This maintains the tire contact with the ground. The wheel suspension characteristics are important for the road holding ability of the tires and the riding quality of the car. It plays vital role in reducing the transient forces to the body as well as the harshness of the environmental noise. 5.2 Suspension systems used in the assembly. Macpherson front suspension The modelling of suspension system is done by referring the mid-size sedan vehicle parameters from the available literature. The MacPherson suspension is the front suspension for this suspension assembly. It is an independent suspension system. The first suspension was made in the Ford Company by Earl S. MacPherson for the first time in 1949. This type of suspension is commonly used in many modern vehicles because of its light weight and compact structure.It provides a steering pivot (kingpin) as well as a suspension mounting for the wheel.The spring is mounted with an inclination to the strut axis. The suspension and steering system has provision to vary the tie rod length with the adjustment of locknut and sleeve. Generally this type of adjustments allows the variation in the range of 40 to 80 mm for all the types of tie rod
