Chapter 9 – Ancient Rome Q1. Engineering and architecture was very important during the time of Ancient Rome. They produced monumental buildings that are impressive to this day. Repetitive structures were built, such as arches and pillars, to create beautiful feats of geometric design. These buildings glorified the state and enriched the lives of Roman citizens.
Many American architects in the 18th and 19th centuries looked to classical Roman architecture as a source of inspiration for their own designs. The White House and U.S. Capitol share similar architectural styles to that of Roman buildings like the Coliseum which has been standing for nearly 2000 years, and the Pantheon. “More recently, many official buildings built in the US are very strongly influenced by Roman architecture. The most obvious is the White House, which displays Roman influences in the arches and columns on the exterior” The Romans were skilled engineers and builders. They used advanced construction techniques such as arches, domes, and vaults to distribute weight and stress evenly throughout a building, which helped to prevent collapse.
The character Melinda from "Speak” by “Laurie Halse Anderson is similar to the character of Alice Sun from “If You Could See The Sun” by Ann Liang because they are both quite anxious people in the beginning of the novels . The two characters are different because Melinda is trying to be noticed by others but Alice is opening up for a love interest/ friendly relationship. In the Novel “Speak”, Melinda was led to a forest by Andy Evans during a Halloween party. She was raped by him, and then called the cops on the party.
Ancient Rome’s art consisted of many buildings with concrete-domed roofs. Roman pride and moralism are interestingly combined in their approach toward architecture. For instance, historians emphasize the size and grandeur of Rome's architecture and describe it as conquering the globe.5 This shows how impressive the architecture of Rome was. These buildings were especially hard to make because at the time it would take hundreds of Romans three months to complete one piece of architecture.
In art the Romans used mosaics, we still use mosaics today. Architecture: In Rome there were many architectural breakthroughs, and they were adopted by Rome’s neighbors. (Etruscans and Greeks) In the world today specifically in the U.S. you can find evidence of Roman architecture.
The Romans have made countless contributions to architecture, engineering, language, law, and philosophy. In addition, they have certainly made an especially lasting impact in art. From mosaics to murals, frescoes to cameos, the Romans definitely developed a unique art style that many non-Roman art pieces have tried to imitate. The Romans were influenced by other cultures such as the Greeks, hence “Greco-Roman” art, but they made it their own by adding their own twist to it. Greek sculpture was known to be incredibly realistic, which the Romans adopted and soon specialized in making busts and statues of people.
The Greeks and Roman used various yet specific building methods to construct some of the most fascinating and intricate architecture in the world. The artistic style of classism intricately combined the thought processes and artistic expressions of the ancient Greeks and ancient Romans. The classic style “placed a great emphasis on harmony, explanation, understanding, order, and formal discipline” (Sporre 222). The Pantheon is one of the most famous landmarks of ancient Rome.
Rome had lasted many years and provided many advances during that era, some of which were lost for centuries. Two important developments that Rome had made were concrete and the arch. Antony Kamm defined concrete on his website The Romans under the Art section as a mixture of clay and limestone heated to high temperature, then pulverized to powder at which mixed with water and sets as hard as rock. He later states that because of this invention, Rome was able to indulge their architectural ambitions. It is important to note that the Romans did not invent the arch, Kamm stats that “their development of it allowed them to exploit their penchant for resolving improbable situations”.
Romans believed in equal voting, and equal access to the government for all, which is also shown in our Democratic Government. Another way Greeks and Romans still influence out modern civilization is through art. Greek art strongly influenced Rome’s art. Greek art continues to play a key role in Literature and Art classes in our modern civilization. Greeks has highly developed literacy, which included drama, poetry, and music.
Augustus and other Roman builders were not directly copying buildings from the city of Athens; they were just merely influenced by the Athenian culture. Augustus was not only inspired by specific Athenian architectural features, but also by the other visual aspects from the Greek culture, such as art. Through this essay I will be discussing the comparisons and the contrast between temples in Greek architecture and roman architecture. I will be commenting on the forms, materials, technology and the siting to compare and contrast the architecture of ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Also I will discuss how these points reflect the structure of the Greek and roman societies from which the temples emerged. Greek Architecture There were three main styles in Greek architecture, these styles were called the Doric style, Ionic style and the Corinthian style.
It’s unique anyways within the Geek and Roman architecture that they evolved to be a great accomplish for a long time, where seriously they look indistinguishable. On the other hand that doesn’t mean that they are not different from each other, contrary each of them has a personality and a way to view its style. As we know that the Greek architecture had developed firstly, so it must had influenced the Roman architecture, and that’s what had happened, even though they were affected exceptionally by the Greeks, however they looked for a separate distinguished personality. In the meantime, we’ll see all over the essay the similarities and differences between both civilizations, including the building types, the techniques, and materials used, style and art.
The Roman and Greek civilizations have many elements in common , both of them have flourished in the field of architecture , art philosophy and science , because both of them occurred very close to each other so they were influenced by each other , to be more specific the Greeks have been influenced by other cultures , and have influenced the Romans , so they have many similarities and differences in these fields . Both Greek and romans flourished in Architecture and art , starting by architecture , the columns in both civilizations were one of three styles or what we call orders , Doric , ionic , and Corinthean . The bath houses used arches, domes and vaults to make them both aesthetically beautiful and to work as functional spaces. The Romans also made spectacular private homes for those who could afford them, and designed and built innovative apartment type buildings for those who couldn’t afford a private residence. As with the Greeks, the Temples of Rome were a great architectural achievement. These temples are a significant source of their architectural history and still today are some of the most visible remains from their culture. Unlike the Greeks who believed in having an equal emphasis in their design on all sides of their temples, the Romans put the emphasis on the front of their buildings.
All this created a very open society, while diverse and complex. Therefore, Roman art is not presented in compact form, with a strictly differentiated and defined as Egyptian art or Greek style. Roman art meets several trends that exist in parallel at one time or combined in a single work.
