Roller Derby HistoryRoller derby goes back as far as the 1920’s but roller skating first appeared as a sport in the 19th century. Americans discovered the sport in Britain in 1881. As roller skating grew in popularity, so did the organization of endurance races. While endurance race became popular, the International Skating Union of America formed in 1907; organising races and establishing set rules that prohibited rough play until 1937. Changes in the sport then increased to level of physical contact and permitting pushing and shoving. Since then the sport has evolved into what it is today.
