James Blair Abbie Murray English 11 20 March 2024. Chicago’s Most Notorious Gang Organized gang activity has been prominent in America since the Prohibition era. It has taken many forms throughout the years. Nowadays, gangs are more of a sectional divide. Each section has its own identity. This holds true for the Black Disciples (BDs), located on the south side of Chicago. They have gained notoriety over the past decade for the relationship they have with hip-hop. Most listeners only know about this. It goes deeper than that. The Black Disciples have proven to be extremely dangerous and are known to do anything to solidify their image. In Gang Threat Analysis: The Black Disciples, George Knox mentions, “The BDs are structured more like a religion where gang leaders are called ‘ministers’,” (Knox, George). There are more examples, like the leader of one of their three hundred sets being announced as ‘King David’. It goes even further, with their ‘bible’ equalling their code of conduct. In the article Black Disciples, Cat Hope implies they commonly wear the roman numeral three (III). This represents the ‘mind, body, and soul’ (Hope). These light-hearted messages show unison amongst members. It seems that ‘brotherhood’ is a better label than ‘gang’. This brotherhood was established in the 1980’s. That brotherhood was needed in the time of crisis, the creation of the Black Disciples. The origins of the Black Disciples can give us an inside look at how they operate. Back in the 1970’s, the Black Disciples were part of the Black Gangster Disciples (BGDs). The BGDs also retreated from Chicago and ran the area for a couple of decades.
