The play, “The Diary of Anne Frank” written by Goodrich and Hackett is a nonfiction drama where a group of Jews have to hide from the Nazis in an attic and it is very chaotic. In the midst of all the chaos, Mrs. Van Daan does not help the situation and is making it worse. Before they went into hiding, the Frank family lived in Frankfurt, Germany. However, due to the increasing death of Jews by the Nazis, they fled to Amsterdam in 1933, where they were safe. They lived there for a couple of years before the Nazis forced them to go into hiding in the secret attic above Mr. Frank’s work building. Mrs. Van Daan has the highest potential to be awarded the worst character in the play due to her talkative nature, annoying behavior, and biased attitude, which contribute to the tension and conflicts within the secret annex and ultimately lead to the falling of the group. Mrs. Van Daan's talkative nature is a big factor in her being the worst character in the play, as her constant chatter and tendency to interrupt others not only annoy others in the annex, but also disrupt the already tense and claustrophobic area in which they live. Mrs. Van Daan's tendency towards panic and irrational thinking is shown when she becomes convinced that something bad has occurred to the Franks and fears that they have been discovered by the Nazis, stating, "Something’s appended to them! I know it! ... Mr. Frank said they’d be here at seven o’clock. He said ... They’ve been picked up. That’s what happened. They’ve been taken ..." (Goodrich and Hackett 284). Mrs. Van Daan's paranoid attitude makes Mr. Van Daan anxious in that scene.
