When a passionate romance results in death, who is to blame other than fate? Although, both Romeo and Juliet had taken their own lives, their actions had been influenced by those around them. Often, the people who care the most tend to push us to make decisions they feel are for the best. In this story, William Shakespeare portrays how good intentions could take a twisted turn and end in tragedy. With that, Juliet’s own father Lord Capulet, is most to blame for the death of not only his own daughter Juliet, but her husband Romeo too because he plays part in their meeting and also acts as an inconsiderate and unapproachable father to Juliet. Many would claim Friar Lawrence is to blame for the fatal deaths, however this is only partly true. While Friar Lawrence does contribute to the tragedy by providing the plan, he would not have had to scheme up this plan if it weren’t for the pressure Lord Capulet had forced on Juliet. Capulet reveals he is inconsiderate when he begins to confidently arrange Juliet’s marriage with Capulet. When first making these plans, he tells Paris to “woo her… get her heart” (1.2.16), making it seem as if he actually cares that the marriage should be based off love. However, he later proves he feels love is not a significant factor to marriage. He then goes on to explain “My will to her consent is but a part” (1.2.17), which he later on proves to be false also. By Act 3, his attitude completely changes. He assures Paris “she will be ruled… I doubt it not” (3.4.14-15). When Juliet refuses to marry Paris, he threatens to disown her by saying “[Y]ou shall not house with me… hang, beg, starve, die in the streets” (3.5.200-204). This is the event that forces Juliet to seek help from Friar Lawrence. It is because of Capulet’s anger that Juliet felt no other she had no other choice.
