Why Coal Is Considered Nonrenewable

934 Words4 Pages

The goal of my research paper is to inform people more about coal. Coal is considered nonrenewable because it does not form or replenish in a short period of time. In the 1700s the English found that coal could produce a fuel that burned cleaner and hotter than wood or charcoal. If we step up production of the coal deposits we know about, they will only give us enough energy to take us as far as 2088. Coal is a fossil fuel that is a burnable rock. It directly provides more than seven million jobs worldwide and supports many more millions. It is the most abundant fossil fuel produced in the United States, but it is a nonrenewable resource. The energy in coal is composed mainly of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

They are Lignite, Bituminous, Anthracite, and Subbituminous coal. Lignite is the lowest one of all the coals. Although lignite is tougher than peat, it crumbles more easily when shipped long distances. Most lignite coal are in the states of North and South Dakota, Montana, and Texas. Lignite is used to generate electricity. Other uses include generating synthetic natural gas and producing fertilizer products. Bituminous is middle in rank and sometimes called soft coal. It appears smooth when you first see it, but if you look very closely you'll find it has many rough layers. It is the most abundant kind of coal. It has a high heating value, so it burns easier. But it also has a high sulfur content. More than 80% of the bituminous coal produce in the U.S. is burned to generate electricity. Other companies that use coal are the cement, food, automobile, textile, and plastic industries. Anthracite is the best of the coals which means that it has the highest heating value and highest carbon content. It is very hard, dark black, and looks almost metallic because it is glossy. Anthracite burns longer, with more heat and with less soot than any other types of coal. The primary use for anthracite is for heating homes all around The United States. Nearly all the anthracite in United States is in …show more content…

Each year a handful of coal miners lose their lives or are seriously injured. Major mine hazards include ceiling collapses, rock bursts, fires, and explosions. The results when flammable gases such as methane are trapped in the coal are that they are released during mining processes and are accidentally ignited. If research can successfully and safely extract methane from coal beds prior to mining, it is expected to lead to safer mines. Also, the repeated inhalation of coal dust over extended periods of time can result in serious health problems such as a black lung or any symptoms of a smoker. Coal mining is not always safe on the environment or beautiful looking. Coal mines and preparing for nuclear plants have caused a lot environmental damage. Nearby streams became filled with sediment, sulfur, and acid drainage which causes lose in the numbers of plants and animals living on the river bank. Since the 1970s, stricter laws have significantly reduced the environmental damage caused by coal mining in developed countries, though more-severe damage continues to occur in many developing countries. I hope Scientist will be able to find another resource like coal but safer for our
