It can be argued that the Missouri Compromise not only put off the start of the Civil War, but was also a cause. Many contributing factors led up to the Civil War in the years following the passing after the Missouri Compromise. Years after the Missouri Compromise went into effect, Congress passed the Tariff Act of 1833, sometimes called the Compromise Tariff. This was proposed by Henry Clay, and called for the gradual reduction of tariffs, ending the Nullification Crisis. In 1846, United States’ President James Polk requested 2 million dollars to purchase land from Mexico following the Mexican-American War.
To start, the Missouri Compromise led to many disputes and eventually veered the nation towards the civil war. In essence, this compromise put a boarder at a 36*30 latitude that would separate the free and slave states. The slave states would be below
So, this essay will explain one from the other. The Missouri Compromise has many differences from the Compromise of 1850. One difference would be that in breaking up the different parts of the Louisiana Territory, it created peace between Northerners and Southerners. The Northerners were happy that more territory was safe for freed slaves, although they weren't quite happy that there was still slavery in the USA. However, the southerners stayed happy until the Southerners realized that this gave congress a say in which states could have slavery.
To replace the problematic Articles of Confederation, Washington, Hamilton, Jay, Franklin, and others organized the 1787 Philadelphia Convention and started to compose a new law of the country, the United States Constitution. However, it wasn’t easy to make every state come into an agreement on things written in the Constitution, since all the state wanted to make sure they were equally and fairly treated. As a result, several major compromises in the ratified version of the Constitution, including the Great Compromise, Three-Fifths Compromise, Slave Trade Compromise and the compromise on the Bill of Rights. The Great Compromise is the a compromise about state representatives, and it was made between large states and small states.

In 1819, Missouri wanted to join the union as a free state. This upset the Confederacy because it set off the balance between the free and slave states. In order to keep behaviors civil, Congress made a two-part compromise, which allowed Missouri to join as a free state, but Maine also got added in as a free state. The United States had 22 states at the
The Compromise of 1850 was an attempt by the U.S Congress to settle divisive issues between the North and South, including slavery expansion, apprehension in the North of fugitive slaves, and slavery in the District of Columbia. The Compromise of 1850 failed because Senator John C. Calhoun from the South and Senator William Seward from the North could not agree on what Henry Clay was putting down. Part of the compromise was to make California a slavery free state which benefits the North, and enforcing a stricter fugitive slave law which benefits the South. Both the North and South opposed what the other was benefiting from. What sparked the failure of the Compromise was the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.
Although in the Missouri Compromise, Missouri became a slave state and Maine became a free state, it was an example of disunity. All new states north of the Mason-Dixon Line would be free and new states southward would be slave states. As a result, there was also an unbalanced sectional population between the North and South. (Doc. E & F).
Previous to the compromise, the northern states held a majority in the House of Representatives and an equal count in the Senate. The south feared that the addition of Missouri as a free state would give northern states the power to outlaw slavery. Ultimately, the south was able to maintain the former political balance in the Congress. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 temporarily settled differences between the regions but could not prevent the inevitable outbreak of the Civil War. An unintentional consequence of another act, the Louisiana Purchase,
The issue the compromise was about was whether there should be slavery in the western territories. Maine wanted to be added to the Union, however, slavery was banned there. If Maine were to be added to the Union, it would upset the balance between free and slave states in the nation and the Senate. So, the Missouri Compromise, proposed by Senator Henry Clay, allowed Maine to enter the Union as a free state, and allowed Missouri to be entered into the Union as a slave state.
Slavery, just the word makes some people cringe. That single word reminds people of America 's deep, dark history. The nation that was divided into two, the war fought over it, all of the innocent lives lost. Slavery was not a good thing in America, but we have learned from our past mistakes. America will never fall that low into a place that cruel ever again.
Many northerners were worried about states entering. The compromise in 1820 by Henry Clay allowed Missouri a slave state, while Maine would become a free state. Also a line
Slavery was a big issue in the 1800s. It divided the country into an argument between having slavery or not having slavery. It also made a conflict between the north and south and they could not agree on it. Some wanted to keep it, some wanted to get rid of it. The states would argue and they could not come up with a compromise.
This issue threatened disunion and civil war. However, after deliberation, Congress passed the Missouri Compromise. It stated that “in the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, slavery would
