Introduction I chose the inquisition of a business’s history because the idea of learning about how it became successful was interesting. The founder of the business I chose and the reason for its theme was unknown to me. Even so, I felt wary about the idea of interviewing a stranger. Also, I wanted to know why the business chose to come to Williamston instead of a larger town. Prior Knowledge I had very little prior knowledge of Groovy Donut’s history. All I knew was that it was a new donut shop that encompasses an older theme. This information came from frequent visits to the shop and hearing about it from others. Interview Questions 1. Why did you choose Williamston to place your business instead of a larger town? Andrew had some familiarity with Williamston. He went to dinner with friends here before and really liked the town. People he talked to were nice and he had a very welcoming experience in Williamston. Since working here, he liked it so much that he moved to Williamston. 3. What are the negatives of having a business in a smaller town? There is less people. He told me that this could be a positive as well. Considering how few people there are, it forces you to improve your product and customer service. Everyone knows everybody and you get recognized all over the place. It doesn’t really matter if you’ve been here a couple years or a couple months. 4. Do you make the donuts yourselves? Yes, Andrew and his partner Monica Lucas make them. They come in around 2 AM every day, except Monday. 5. If so, is there any significance in where the recipes came from? His parents had a couple restaurants when he was younger. Specifically his dad had experience with bakeries when he was growing up. He and his brother took the pizza dough and experimented and created little donuts. They will make just about anything you can do with a donut. One of their harder requests was a type of their “Funky Hubcap”, which is like a dozen donuts in one. It was filled with different types of filling (Crème and Jelly), glazed, and had a bunch of frosting on top. It was hard because of its weight and there was a risk in it breaking. It was pretty interesting to make. 14. What were the most donuts you’ve ever sold at one time? 20 dozen for a birthday party. (Gauthier) Learning During this project, I learned a couple different things about smaller businesses. If you approach them kindly and professionally, they will treat you in the same manner. I also learned that small businesses like to answer questions because it broadens their perspective of their customers.
