Persuasive Paper Final Draft
They blacken your lungs and cause damage to your body. They are life threatening. And, yet, you still reach out for another cigarette. You still reach out for another stick that can kill you. It may seem harmless, but it really isn't. People smoke at the expense of their health and at the cost of others. When will people realize that smoking kills? It seems to me that most people know that cigarettes blacken their lungs and cause damage to their body, but why do they still reach out for another one? It all comes down to being addicted to it. Young teens start to smoke due to ennui, to look mature, to be like their friends, or to experiment, but adults smoke for other reasons, whether it's stress and pressure, being unemployed or not making enough money, being homeless, or maybe even being in bad marriages or relationships. What they don't know is the consequences of smoking can be lung cancer. The American Cancer Society estimated that 159,260 Americans were expected to die from lung cancer in 2014 (Why Quit Smoking). An average American spends close to $5,000 a year on cigarettes; that is almost enough for a used car! How often do people go outside in terrible weather, during a movie, or in the middle of a conversation to smoke? It is inconvenient for one to pause a movie just because their body is demanding a cigarette. Some think that it's a good way to get some fresh air by going outside and lighting up a cigarette. Is it really fresh air if they are actually inhaling the chemicals and other ingredients in a cigarette? No, it's not.
