Why I Chose Your Economics Class

The summer after I graduated from high school I began working at Applebee’s. I traded in my seven-hour school day, consisting primarily of sitting at a desk and diligently working, for shifts at a restaurant where I constantly ran around. This job was my first taste of adulthood and the responsibilities that come with it. A benefit this job provided, was an opportunity to learn how to deal with co-workers, managers, and customers, as well as being flexible when planning around a work schedule. I experienced first hand what a fast-paced work environment is like. Once I started taking business classes, I began to recognize how much what I was learning in these classes correlated to the things I was also experiencing at my job. It is one thing to take an economics class and learn about supply and demand but it is another to experience it. While enrolled in my economics class, students were asked to post in a discussion board giving examples from the material we had learned that week. I soon began to realize that a majority of my examples were coming from real life situations I was encountering everyday at work. I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about the business aspect of a restaurant. I started asking questions, helping my managers do inventory, learning about labor and our sales for this year compared to past years. This was a huge goal that I was able to complete. The most rewarding part of my job is that it has allowed me to play a bigger role in helping my mom alleviate the burden of her financial stress.
