Abortions: A Controversial Topic It is easy to say you would never get an abortion if you have not been put in that position. It is easy to judge someone for making a decision you have never had to make. The article “Abortion: An Overview” discusses the topic of abortion which is the act of removing a human embryo or fetus from the uterus of a pregnant woman prior to the completion of the full term of pregnancy. In early history, abortions were punishable by death unless the mother’s health is in danger. Many believe abortions should have many regulations on them or should not be allowed at all, while others think women should have full choice and privacy about their bodies. Those who oppose to abortions believe a child should be brought in the world and women get abortions for casual reasons. The controversy behind abortions has been prominent in the United States for a long time: “Abortions did not become legal in the United States until 1973” (Sprague 1). Before abortions were legal, thousands of women found ways to illegally complete the termination. Banning abortions would not stop women from getting them but instead would lead to unsafe and unhealthy alternatives (Sprague 2). Taking away safe abortion options negatively impacts the poor because they are more likely to face unwanted pregnancies because of limited access to education and contraceptives: “Economists Steve Levitt and John Donohue have suggested that by reducing the number of babies born to women who were unable to handle the burden of childreering at the time of their pregnancies, the legalization of abortion in the United States actually led to a drop in crime rates (Sprague 3).
