Miley Cyrus’s 2013 VMA performance and Nicki Minaj’s new music video “Anaconda” are two widely known events in the music world. Some like and encourage the sexual imagery and drug reference used by these two female artists but many find it too explicit for some viewers. Is sexually explicit music that can be seen or heard by children too much? Music is life's backdrop wherever we go. Anyone can access it anytime which makes it easier for young children to be exposed to its vulgarity. Songs could have drug references, cuss words, and even violence. Since children learn from people they hear and see, they could start saying inappropriate things or start to cuss. Today’s music could possibly push kids at such an early age to have sex or do drugs because rappers said so and it’s the cool thing to do. This could potentially bring harm upon the child himself/herself or a number of other people. There have been many drug related arrests of children not even eighteen years old in the past decade. They are punished, fined, and sometimes even sent to jail. Rappers or singers who say how cool it is to do drugs get no charges because they are “just giving the people what they want to hear.” It’s not their fault someone took it too literally right? Wrong. With the amount of songs saying how it’s no big deal because everyone does it, I’m not surprised. Here is another example of young people trying to impress one another by doing something they heard in a song. The effects of their actions are varied widely. They could have children while they are still considered children themselves. This could hinder their academic studies and take away their chances at furthering their education. They could get a bad reputation, be called horrible names, and in some cases commit suicide. Not all of it is because of the exact lyrics, but it snowballed from trying to be cool like the person who wrote the lyrics
